THE SX01 is the ultimate small wave, high performance machine. It will get you going top to bottom and blowing the tail out in places that you never thought was possible.

With added volume and a slightly larger plan shape this board carries well through gutless sections but is ready to attack the lip at any stage when the opportunity presents. It really is a high performance board, for good surfers, suited to everyday conditions.

About the board

General goal | theme of the board

A high performance small wave step down.

Wave type ||| size it's working best

Small softer waves. From just under waist high up to head and a half.

Maneuvers it does best

Vert reos and powered up pocket snaps, general high performance surfing.

Skill level it's best for

Advanced to Pro.

Paddle power

Above Average.

What you thought of when you designed it?

Was getting a lot of requests for a higher volume, high performance small wave board. The tail rocker is standard high performance shortboard, with a slightly flatter nose entry, so you’re not pushing water on low speed takeoffs. The generously curved outline has a tight turning circle, with hard edges for release and tail area that offers plenty of drive off the back foot. The subtle hip flyer into a rounded pin gives a nice tight hook to back foot turns.

What it possibly compromises on then?

Not really any compromises, it’s a great performance small wave board. Just make sure you ride it in the right conditions, if it's overpowered it will get slippery and out of control at speed.

Shape details summary | Design info

Outline

Curvy, subtle hip flyer rounded pin. Look at the overall plan shape and you see an outline that has a relatively tight arc nose to tail, plus the added flyer to rounded pin. So from either the first pump or the first bottom turn the board has great sensitivity and initiates turns instantly, it has a very free easy pump action and goes top to bottom effortlessly. The hip flyer adds an instant response as your weight transitions onto the back foot, so bottom turns can be squared off really tight allowing a more vertical approach to the lip with a super tight hook underneath it. The rounded pin allows it to be surfed tight while still keeping the rail engaged, meaning tight on rail power surfing, all packaged into a slightly larger plan shape so it carries super well in low power situations.

Rails

Full boxy with harder bottom edges in the tail that carry forward slightly. The fuller rails offer a different way to get speed on the take off, if the waves are softer, you bury the inside rail on the first pump, as the rail pops out you can use this momentum to get the other rail in and continue with a rhythmic pumping action. The harder edges have good release, so the board really wants to skate along fast on top of the water. The boxiness of the rail allows really aggressive driving front foot cutbacks with less chance of bogging the rail.

Rocker

Full performance tail rocker, with a slightly flatter nose entry. With this amount of rocker, the board stays nice and loose, super sensitive and fits into tight pockets, allowing you to attack sections at speed. The slightly flatter nose carries onto small waves better without pushing water.

Bottom

Single concave. The concave helps the inside rail engage earlier, initiating turns faster, while also directing water off the outside rail in a downward direction, applying Newton's 3rd law of physics.

Deck

Deck roll is about standard, the board has some added beef which carries to the rail.

Fins

Thruster. For top to bottom surfing the thruster will always be the better option.

Final Statement

A good high performance board that allows you to tear the bags out of a small wave. Like the Nitro and Clone, this board is recommended for more advanced surfers.
