THE DYNAMO’s Original concept came from Vance Burrows around 2000. He wanted something with the paddle power of his longboard with the performance of a shortboard. So we essentially took a 9’ longboard and chopped 2 feet out of the middle.

We made it, he loved it and so has everyone since. Get in early with amazing paddle power and still hook some decent turns.

About the board

General goal | theme of the board

A wave catching machine you can have fun on.

Wave type ||| size it's working best

Most wave types, excluding sucky bowly waves with tight pockets. It likes down the line waves. From just under waist high up to double overhead.

Maneuvers it does best

Clean roundhouse cutbacks, carves and making sections.

Skill level it's best for

Novice to Pro.

Paddle power

Well above average.

What you thought of when you designed it?

Originally the concept came from Vance Burrows around 2000. He wanted something with the paddle power of his longboard with the performance of a shortboard. So we essentially took a 9’ longboard and chopped 2 feet out of the middle.

What it possibly compromises on then?

The straighter section of outline through the middle gives the board a longer feel, draws the turns out a little more and makes it feel a little stiffer to pump for speed. The wide nose doesn’t like being pushed too deep in the pocket or snapping under the lip.

Shape details summary | Design info

Outline

Longboard style nose, clean outline, rounded pin. With the full longboard nose, the board climbs on top of the water really fast, within the first few strokes. The center outline runs a longer straighter arc, so when on rail it really keeps and maintains great down the line speed and easily drives around sections. The area in the nose loves whitewater, you climb onto and over whitewater like it was green water, this makes it feel super stable in roundhouses where you hit the white water. The tail still pulls in relatively tight, so off the back foot you can still get a decent snap, but not too close to the pocket, or the nose can get in the way.

Rails

Low, shortboard performance style. The low rails offer some sensitivity, the first thing you do when turning is bury one rail, when it’s lower it drops in quicker and easier. This helps offset some of the stiffness coming from the outline.

Rocker

Medium rocker. With this amount of rocker, the board stays nice and fast and maintains good carry and paddle speed.

Bottom

Flat bottom. Fast and reliable, to date it's been a fun all round board to ride. I would probably be open to dropping a single concave through the tail of this board.

Deck

The deck is a fairly standard profile, the board is not super thick so even though it has low rails, the roll is quite comfortable.

Fins

Thruster. For top to bottom surfing the thruster is always the best performance option.

Final Statement

A good all round board for softer fast waves, great paddle power and carry. If you have a carvy style and don’t like flicking your board around, it's perfect. It likes to be surfed with the emphasis on drawn arcs and power surfing. One aspect we never thought about when it was designed, is that it’s actually a great board for big airs, the amount of nose area allows it to sail into the wind with a cross onshore.
