THE CLONE is a tried and tested high-performance shape falling within the spec of many of today’s professional surfers.
Extra tail rocker combined with a wider plan shape and bump squash tail, allows for surfing close to the pocket with the ability to quickly pull a new line in a tight spot. This board is the next generation of high-performance surfing. Taking spring and projection to the next level this board has evolved as surfing has to give you a board that will let you perform at the top of your game.
A high performance, small wave shortboard that resembles what most modern pros are riding as a step down.
Good quality small waves. From just under waist high up to head and a half.
Tight roundhouses in the top 1/3rd of the wave and tail wafts, general high performance surfing.
Advanced to Pro.
Average.
This model is based on the original Clone, which was basically a copy of one of Taj’s favorites and resembled what most pro surfers were riding at the time. Over the last 10 years board lengths have come down, so we wanted a board that reflected the latest fashion in board design but also didn’t compromise on performance. The board is low volume for its area, but also carries the volume it does have to the rails, so for its width it still sticks to the face well on late drops because of the softer rounder bottom edge up front and the tuck in the tail.
LOL, no compromises, great performance small wave board. If anything the volume is set up to be the bare minimum, this was a tactic so people who choose boards based on volume alone, could not possibly choose a board that was too small. The recommended rider weights are calculated on surface area and the ability to plane in low speed waves along with pumping, so if you choose the right board for your size, then the volume would be about what your average pro is riding compared to their body weight.
Clean arc squash tail. A look at the overall plan shape and you see an outline that has a relatively tight arc nose to tail, so from either the first pump or the first bottom turn the board has great sensitivity and initiates turns instantly. It has a very free easy pump action and goes top to bottom effortlessly. The squash, having a slightly straighter outline from the fins back will want to crack into a drift slightly earlier than the Nitro for example, so the board offers great top to bottom performance with tight clean lines, finishing off tight reos with a subtle waft to complete the move.
Low volume but boxy. A lower volume rail offers good sensitivity as you initiate a turn, but blady rails often mean being forced to run a tight radius tuck in the bottom edge. The Clone has quite a full round bottom rail with the apex running closer to the deck. In the tail bottom edge is quite tucked, this combo offers nice hold on the face into a late sucky drop or high speed attack. The tucked edge in the tail has great control while drifting sideways and backwards, being less prone to catching a rail and the board flipping underneath you.
Full performance tail rocker, with a slightly flatter nose entry. With this amount of rocker, the board stays nice and loose, super sensitive and fits into tight pockets, allowing you to attack sections at speed. The slightly flatter nose carries onto small waves better without pushing water.
Single concave. No bullshit about redirecting water into the tail or generating lift, blah blah. The concave helps the inside rail engage earlier, initiating turns faster, while also directing water off the outside rail in a downward direction, applying Newton's 3rd law of physics.
Flatter than standard. The deck is fairly flat, due to the low volume and fuller boxier rail. This offers a level of comfort as well as a slightly faster reaction time into turns.
Thruster. For top to bottom surfing the thruster will always be the better option.
A good high performance small wave board for advanced surfers that will not disappoint. As a word of caution, we do recommend this board for Advanced to Pro level riders, if you can not generate your own speed by pumping your board, this is not the right board for you.
