Surfer, innovator, designer and shaper...
Bert Burger came of age, with salt in the air and foam dust on his feet. Growing up in Mandurah on Western Australia’s 12,000 km coastline, the surf‘s was always up at Bert’s home breaks. Famous for its variety and quality of waves, heavy reefs, point breaks and punchy beachies. It was the perfect testing ground for a young man’s surfing aspirations and his home crafted surfboards.
Introduced to the World of Surfing in his early years, he started his shaping journey at the age of 12 and 2 years later, at the ripe old age of 14, he was working in the surf Industry professionally, full time. Bert’s early natural ability for surfboard engineering has since pioneered the industries construction standards. He Invented the Parabolic Rail, a groundbreaking profile offering superior flex, spring back and smooth performance underfoot, now adopted widely across modern surfboard design.
Bert challenged the industries perception of what was possible. His science based approach, mixed with practical riding experience, as a competitive surfer himself, created this unique board construction with that electric, alive feeling and performance that other surfers have come to know and love. Challenging the surf community as a whole to understand that there was a higher performing, longer lasting way to craft surfboards. Bert’s boards were much more durable than the standard PU surfboards of the time, that surfers were used to riding all their lives. It didn't make much sense to Bert to be Paying $600 per board, every 6 months for a new surfboard, when you could pay a bit more for one of his boards, which would then last 10 years or more.

Bert’s innovation didn't go unnoticed. He became a household name among other shapers, while he became the Founder of Sunova Surfboards & Co‑Founded Firewire Surfboards. Two brands synonymous with innovation, high performance and surfboard longevity. Bert was Awarded Shaper of the Year 2007, recognizing his contributions to composite sandwich construction and sustainable EPS/epoxy board technologies. Placing Bert amongst the most recognized and influential surfboard craftsmen, Tom Blake, Bob McTavish, George Greenough and Simon Anderson to name a few…
45 years of Shaping experience and 5000 surfboards later, Bert’s Sunova Surfboards still embodies a surf culture where design meets engineering precision and performance.
