THE NITRO is a design driven by the need of competitive surfers, who need to operate with a wide maneuver repertoire. Sunova Team Riders claimed that they were “totally blowing up on this board” so we named it the Nitro.
Generous curve through the middle of the plan-shape and a low rail designed for release. This combination gives the Nitro the ability to generate speed from the moment you stand up.

About the board
General goal | theme of the board
A high performance board, for quality waves.
Wave type ||| size it's working best
Good quality steeper waves. From just under waist high up to double overhead.
Maneuvers it does best
Vertical re-entries, tight snaps in the pocket.
Skill level it's best for
Advanced to Pro.
Paddle power
Average.
What you thought of when you designed it?
This model is based on the original Pro, a model that dates back to the early 90’s. When I lived in West Oz the Pro was the go to all round performance board, after migrating to the Gold Coast I found the waves just didn’t have the same power. So I took a Pro and added a fraction more width to the same outline and rocker, this worked really well on the East Coast. One team rider claimed he was totally blowing up on this board, so we named it the Nitro in 2005, since then it has become a staple high performance board.
What it possibly compromises on then?
It’s an extremely sensitive board so it needs a good surfer and plenty of movement. It wants to be pumped and kept moving the whole time so not an ideal board for the flowing retro style master. Additionally, it likes a bit more punch, but not quite West Oz or Hawaii punch.

Design info
Outline
Standard clean shortboard arc, subtle hip flyer to rounded pin. Look at the overall plan shape and you see an outline that has a relatively tight arc nose to tail, plus the added flyer to rounded pin. So from either the first pump or the first bottom turn the board has great sensitivity and initiates turns instantly, it has a very free easy pump action and goes top to bottom effortlessly. The hip flyer adds an instant response as your weight transitions onto the back foot, so bottom turns can be squared off really tight allowing a more vertical approach to the lip with a super tight hook underneath it. The rounded pin allows it to be surfed tight while still keeping the rail engaged, meaning tight on rail power surfing.
Rails
Low volume, tucked bottom edge. A lower volume rail offers good sensitivity as you initiate a turn, the Nitro has quite a full round bottom rail, extra tuck at the front fins with the apex running closer to the deck. This combo offers nice hold on the face into a late sucky drop or high speed attack. The tucked edge in the tail has great control while drifting sideways and backwards, being less prone to catching a rail and the board flipping underneath you.
Rocker
Full performance rocker. With this amount of rocker, the board stays nice and loose, super sensitive and fits into tight pockets, allowing you to attack sections at speed.
Bottom
Single concave. The concave helps the inside rail engage earlier, initiating turns faster, while also directing water off the outside rail in a downward direction, applying Newton's 3rd law of physics.
Deck
The deck is a fairly standard roll, due to the low volume rail. This offers a slightly faster reaction time into turns.
Fins
Thruster. For top to bottom surfing the thruster will always be the better option.
Final Statement
A good high performance board that you can rip the bags out of. As close to thought control as you will find.
